Puerto Rico

The sacrifices I make for my company. I mean, Puerto Rico? It is so far away, but when duty calls, you gotta do what you gotta do. In all seriousness though, I am really fortunate to have a solid job that allows me to see the many wonderful places this beautiful world has to offer.

My work took me to Cayey, PR. It is on the mountainous south side of the island about 1.5 hours from San Juan. This trip to PR was a whole lot different than last. Last time we were only there for a couple of days and really didn't have to interact with the locals. This time, I was completely immersed and me no really speako espaniolo.
I checked in to my hotel about 10 pm so I wasn't able to get an idea of my surroundings. When I woke the following morning and looked out my window, I was surprised to find a cock fighting arena next to my hotel. It reminded me a little of the Philippines.
I was able to check out some of the nearby beaches. There were some beautiful shores and great waves. I did have a hard time finding a surf shop though let alone a beach crowded with people. This leads me to my rule about places you don't know... basically when in Rome, do as the Romans do. If there are no locals swimming, surfing, snorkeling, etc. then there is likely a really good reason why. But seeing that I wasn't in Rome, I thought I would get in the water a little. I am glad I did because those were the best waves I have ever body surfed. They were just little dinky 4 foot curls but you can ride them for about 40-50 feet. Besides, it's not really a rule per se... more like guidelines.
